Pussy Riot

Russia-  In August 2011 a feminist punk band began a journey that has found two members imprisoned for hooliganism a year after starting the band.

In October of 2012 Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova were sent to separate prisons after being charged with crimes of religious hatred after a performance at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour church in Moscow. They claimed the protest was in regard to the church leaders support for Putin during the latest election.  They believe Putin to be a dictator.

The band concerts usually last around two minutes and are videotaped for publishing on YouTube. Their inspiration comes from 90’s bands such as “Riot Grrrl” & “Bikini Kill”.

“What we have in common is impudence, politically loaded lyrics, the importance of feminist discourse and a non-standard female image. The difference is that Bikini Kill performed at specific music venues, while we hold unsanctioned concerts. On the whole, Riot Grrrl was closely linked to Western cultural institutions, whose equivalents don’t exist in Russia.”

This is a very out spoken band standing up for LGBT rights and they are united by feminism, anti-authoritarianism and opposition to Putin. Pussy Riot has only seven songs and five video’s to their credit and no albums, but can be found among many internet sites.

During the trial, Putin stated that while he saw “nothing good” about the band’s protest, “Nonetheless, I don’t think that they should be judged so harshly for this.” Although pleading not guilty, prosecutors stated they were trying to incite religious hatred against the Orthodox church. Not helping the cause was a statement made by Pussy Riot in the Putin Zassal song,  “The Orthodox Religion is a hardened penis / Coercing its subjects to accept conformity”. The Judge trying the case said they were undermining social order and passed sentencing of two years apiece. The two women said that “Under no circumstances will we ask for a pardon from Putin”.

Voicing support for the release of the band members are many artists from around the world including Green Day, Bryan Adams, Genesis, John Cale, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers among many more. Even with all this support Pussy Riot had this to say  “We’re flattered, of course, that Madonna and Björk have offered to perform with us. But the only performances we’ll participate in are illegal ones. We refuse to perform as part of the capitalist system, at concerts where they sell tickets.”

On Monday 4/8/13, President Vladimir Putin was in Germany for a tour of the Hanover fair [highlighting russian business] accompanied by German Chancellor Angela Merkel when he was once again the focus of protester’s, this time by the group Femen. Three women protesting the detention of Pussy Riot members showed up bare to the waist and shouted slogans of “dictator” before being covered up and removed.

By the look in the photo President Putin isn’t too concerned about safety or addressing the protesters.  “Regarding this performance, I liked it”, “I did not catch what they were shouting, I did not even see if they were blondes, brunettes or chestnut-haired … I don’t see anything terrible in (the protest), though I think … it is better to be dressed if one wants to discuss political matters.”

I have never been into “Punk Music” myself but do not see anything wrong with people stating their beliefs and even though they are not in America I believe these women should not have been sentenced to prison for two years for making a two-minute video, whatever the circumstances might have been. After all “Freedom of speech” should be universal.
