I’ll Take You There!

1971 found us watching what was to become a legendary show with the first episode of Soul Train.  Don Cornelius hosted and produced the show that brought us the “Soul Train Line” where two lines of dancers would strut their stuff  down the aisle between the lines. The “hippest trip in america” featured name acts where they would perform two numbers and be interviewed by Don in between songs.

Soul Train.png  The show hit syndication and never looked back lasting until 2006 and running for an hour on its weekly               show. Those early years were a fun time to watch the show as a grooving era of music was taking over our country. Songs  like the O’Jays “Love Train” and “I love Music” along with hits such as “Lets Stay Together” by Al Green and “Friendship Train” by Gladys Knight & the Pips made it an enjoyable time to take a break and sit in front of the tv to watch these awesome shows. Funk, Jazz, Soul and R&B were becoming a major influence in my life at this time and I look back with fond memories of a time I truly miss. Dick Clark, america’s much-loved host of American Bandstand tried to cash in on the success of Don’s show with a 1973 flop of  “Soul Unlimited” a show with controversial racist overtures. Soul Train had dancers on before they found fame like Rosie Perez, Fred Berry {re-run}, MC Hammer, and the legend Walter Payton.

Don Cornelius left us with a legacy that brought forth a venue for diversified pop culture and soul music. His show was a springboard for many  artists and I for one thank him for enlightening my soul. His suicide was a tragic end to a fabulous journey.   I will quote Don’s catchphrase  “I’m Don Cornelius, and as always in parting, we wish you love, peace and Soul!”.

another time peace,
